Not All Ceramic Coatings Are the Same: What to Ask Before You Book
What Product Are You Using?
This is the first question and it matters more than most people realize. There are dozens of ceramic coating brands on the market, and they're not all built the same. Some are consumer-grade products repackaged as professional coatings. Others are legitimate professional-grade formulas designed for long-term performance.
At Xtreme Car & Truck Accessories in Bridgeville, PA, we use XPEL FUSION PLUS Ceramic Coating. XPEL is a globally recognized brand in the vehicle protection industry, and FUSION PLUS is engineered for long-lasting gloss, hydrophobic performance, and protection against UV rays, oxidation, road salt, and environmental contaminants.
What Does Your Prep Process Look Like?
This is where a lot of shops cut corners. Ceramic coating bonds to whatever is on the surface when it's applied. If the surface has swirl marks, embedded contaminants, water spots, or old wax residue, the coating locks all of that in.
A proper ceramic coating job should include a thorough hand wash, chemical decontamination and clay bar treatment to remove embedded particles, paint correction to address swirl marks, scratches, and haze, and a final panel wipe to strip any remaining oils or residue before the coating goes on.
If a shop tells you they can ceramic coat your vehicle in a few hours with no prep work, that's a red flag. At Xtreme, we follow a full multi-step prep process because we know the coating is only as good as the surface underneath it.
How Long Will It Last?
This depends on the product, the prep work, and how the vehicle is maintained afterward. A properly applied professional-grade ceramic coating like XPEL FUSION PLUS is designed to last for years, not months.
Be cautious of shops that promise unrealistic lifespans or make it sound like the coating is permanent and indestructible. Ceramic coating is durable and long-lasting, but it's not invincible. It still benefits from proper wash techniques and periodic maintenance.
Do You Offer Paint Correction Before Coating?
If the answer is no or they charge it as a completely separate service that's not part of their coating process, be careful. Paint correction should be a standard part of any professional ceramic coating application. Applying a coating over swirled or scratched paint defeats the purpose.
At Xtreme, paint correction is part of our ceramic coating process. We assess the paint condition, correct what needs to be corrected, and then apply the coating to a clean, smooth surface.
Can I See Examples of Your Work?
Any reputable shop should be able to show you photos or a gallery of their ceramic coating work. Look for close-up shots that show the gloss, clarity, and depth of the finish. If they can't show you real results from real vehicles they've coated, that should give you pause.
You can browse our gallery at xtremetruck.net/gallery to see examples of the work we do.
What's Included in the Price?
Make sure you understand what you're getting. Some shops quote a low price but don't include wash, decontamination, or paint correction. Then those get added as extras and the final bill is significantly higher than expected.
